The Police Force in Tanzania announced on Wednesday that it had seized gold worth over Sh9 billion that was being smuggled from Bulyanhulu Gold Mines.
According to the police, during the swoop they also found mineral concentrates weighing 261 kilos suspected to have gold minerals whose value is yet to be determined.
Speaking to reporters earlier on Wednesday, August 23, Shinyanga Region Police Commander ACP Janeth Magomi said they had seized 6.75 kilos of gold stones and arrested several people in connection with the gold smuggling in an operation that lasted almost a month between July 26 and August 22, 2023.
“The suspects are in custody and will be arraigned shortly after the investigations are complete.”
The police, however, fell short of revealing the identity and number of those who have been arrested in connection with the gold smuggling case.
In another development, police said they have seized 603 litres of diesel, which was stolen from the ongoing construction work of the Standard Gauge Railway.
Ms. Magomi said the suspects had stashed the 600 litres of diesel in small containers before transporting their loot to its destination.
